Tomorrow is Day 1 of Corners' principle photography. We'll start the film shoot by murdering two old people (I don't actually know our actors' ages so maybe they're closer to middle age.)
We had been looking at a few different options for using a camera with a shallow depth of field (Nikon D7 and Canon 5D) but the D7 is a real pain in the ass when it comes to video and renting a 5D for a month is about $30 dollars short of buying one (which we didn't have that in our budget as we were counting on several friends and colleagues with cameras to help us out.)
We planned to shoot on a Panasonic 150 but have since moved up (or over) to a Sony EX3. I did a camera test with the 150 and EX3 side by side and didn't notice a real difference besides the 150 having a stronger contrast.
I was starting to get a little sad that we didn't have a simple solution to our depth-of-field problem, but while filming a museum video with Dale Walksler I started playing with the macro lens on the 150. I'm sure it's not a straight-up filmic look--but I can blow out the background while keeping the subject in focus from about seven feet away.
I'm going to play with it today and hopefully when on set tomorrow it'll work perfect. Because everything on a low-budget film set works out perfectly!!
